The Thiel Fellowship gives $100k to 25 kids a year to drop out of college and start a company. This morning a Thiel Fellowshow recipient (now 25 years old) just sold a self-driving car startup he started with his $100k for $3.4 billion at age 18. Hell yeah.

People say college is unnecessary bc “the internet”— while we can’t even read the linked article without paying. Our system is really good at identifying value and then making people pay for it. Still need public investment in education for students of all abilities and means.

The linked article is an example of what happens when accessing content from the Economist, Foreign Policy, WSJ, academic journals, subscriber content from people’s Patreons, etc. The internet is a treasure trove of information, much of it free. But it’s not free to produce...

...Since the internet works like the rest of the world—often driven by market forces—I worry that accessing quality content could become prohibitively expensive one day for people looking to self-educate. For now, it’s much cheaper than a college degree. I hope it stays that way.
