Just spoke with my dr. She works a lot with homeless and addicts. She said since covid started, SF homeless have been given hotel rooms - they've seen a massive uptick in drug overdoses. Her hypothesis: hotel rooms made it easier to do drugs and easier to be lonely.
This is something I think a lot about when people discuss the homeless issue in SF. Lack of affordable housing isn't a perfect solution. If people are addicts, an apartment isn't a magic fix. Helping them kick drugs, which is people need to want, is step 1.
Who said the drugs came first?
Me. In most cases, that's true.
Step 1 is recognizing drug addiction is a disease. Without that, we cant have the right treatment plan.
I don't agree. When I had issues, I didn't give two shits what you called it. It was a problem. And it was up to me to want to get better. Disease, disorder, bad habit. Whatever. Call it what you want. The actions to improve are the same.
Interesting case study. I would love to see the results of similar programs in LA, New York and Miami
And generally just handing out money and stuff to people doesn’t fix things either although it might be well intentioned.
