Marketing. He figured out how to get into the psyche of consumers. Pepsodent was a best seller for close to 30 years. 
Listerine was a floor cleaner and surgical antiseptic before an ad campaign made bad breath an embarrassment.
I remember reading in the Power of Habit about using the same feedback brought Febreze from doom!
