      It's crazy how many @TechCrunch reporters have a Substack. This is NOT good for Techcrunch. To me, this is a sign of unrest, poor leadership, and a very bad strategy. Not good for TC.

      Why? I know nothing about the internal workings of TC, but reporters growing their audiences outside of TC can only mean good things for all concerned IMO.

      if you have engineers who work on your ride-sharing app and they're building a ride-sharing app on the side, to me it'd mean you're not letting that engineer be creative or heard in your org or you're not addressing an insight they have and you'll soon have a competitor.

      I disagree. Writing and building online presence is a right for everyone, regardless whether they work for a press organization or not.

      It's certainly not an inherent right. It all depends on the employment agreement.

      I would imagine restricting writing about certain topics that are the main focus of the business, but restricting writing altogether is something that happens only in dictatorships.

      but that's what's going on: TC writers are substacking about tech companies.

          So I clicked in one of your examples. The writer has posts about hiking and tiramisu on her Substack. Why would TC care? It's like an eng working at a ride-sharing app company and making a blog app on the side. The company would be happy they are honing their skills.
