It's crazy how many @TechCrunch reporters have a Substack.
This is NOT good for Techcrunch. To me, this is a sign of unrest, poor leadership, and a very bad strategy.
Not good for TC.

Ride sharing is far more zero sum than consuming content on the internet.

How so? You can use Lyft, Uber, rent a car or more. You can pay money to how many tech pubs? Prolly the same amount (a handful). Same with an advertiser. They have many options, can only choose a couple.

Engineers setting up a competing ride-sharing company only has negative consequences for the company. Reporters having a private Substack has several positive consequences and no concrete negative consequences.

Reporters are increasingly expected to build their own brand (while also obeying employer expectations, spoken or not). The chances that one of them will build, say, a podcast so successful that it eclipses or even compete with established pubs like TC is frankly ludicrous. I

And if you're going to tweet that this is "Not good" you should give equal air time to the fact that their salaries are also "not good."
