It's crazy how many @TechCrunch reporters have a Substack.
This is NOT good for Techcrunch. To me, this is a sign of unrest, poor leadership, and a very bad strategy.
Not good for TC.

Why? I know nothing about the internal workings of TC, but reporters growing their audiences outside of TC can only mean good things for all concerned IMO.
if you have engineers who work on your ride-sharing app and they're building a ride-sharing app on the side, to me it'd mean you're not letting that engineer be creative or heard in your org or you're not addressing an insight they have and you'll soon have a competitor.

Meh. Bad analogy coming from a scarcity mindset. Allowing reporters to grow their own audiences by writing (different, less restricted) content on a private Substack just leads to happier, wealthier reporters and - indirectly - a larger audience for TC.

I disagree. Writing and building online presence is a right for everyone, regardless whether they work for a press organization or not.

It's certainly not an inherent right. It all depends on the employment agreement.
