Let’s get this straight; “Chasing clicks” is not inherently bad. And clickbait, aka outrageous headlines, is also not inherently bad. The NYT and virtually any other pub with more than 30 employees has some1 works on shaping content based on traffic data. And that’s ok.

The issue, though, is when people pass off their opinion as “news reporting”. The difference is that you know that in going to TMZ/etc. you’re getting a specific kind of content and are consciously opting in!

It's true that all approaches are great for business but not ]for civil discourse or a healthy society. Like I'm sure if we opened a Coliseum and televised people fighting to the death with swords and shields, it would get great ratings. But do we want to live in that world?
