I think a lot of corporate types or startups use the word "community" as a buzzword and they look at it from a very academic, fluffy perspective. I'm not sure of the exact way to make a community, and we're still young, but it took LOTS of time and effort.
I think outsiders would be surprised at how much you need to care and believe in the people and topics of the community. You need to rally people around a point of view and actually participate and be part of it.
