The future of journalism is free — not subscriptions. Why make the best information *less* popular?

Yeah, I 100% don't agree. 1. 100% ad-supported news will not give you the full truth 2. People are more nervous now than ever about privacy, ad targeting...so many will pay 3. Free stuff has been the norm. Sub revenue has always been popular tho

Long story short: 1. Both free and paid will always exist. 2. Paid used to thrive more than it does now. But I think it will grow big time in next 5 years

Paid will stay for niche pubs and premium content. But for “news” — the stuff that builds common knowledge — there’s a conflict of interest between publishers and readers that the subscription model does not resolve: - Readers need truth/usefulness - Publishers need profit

Appreciate your input, by the way!
Another problem with subscriptions is they subdivide ideological tribes further.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

If you pay for cable, you get everything. I imagine things like that will continue to exist. But the problem with advertising is the profits aren't huge and the audience/creator/advertiser do not have the same incentives.

100%. The incentive misalignment is the biggest problem in journalism.

I don't think any solution is perfect. But I can say with experience building a medium-size medium company: 100% ad-supported journalism is either (or both) 1. so difficult to sustain 2. does not give you 100% the truth

100% agree. The incentive misalignment pervades the ad model as well.
