Part of me thinks this is a hedge against cancel culture.

Mike wrote a solid thread (and then blog post at the end) on this as well.https://twitter.com/MichaelIppo/status/1263286031505412096 …

The math is still off. Most projections in that blog post are still less than the reported $100m+/year that he gets, and it assumes Rogan's ad revenue has no cost.

The idea is to hopefully bring joes loyalists to Spotify. Even if you convert 5% of them to paying customers the math starts to add up.

@theSamParr this sets the bar super low... The creator of largest podcast in the world is worth more than 100m -
Likely joe isn’t losing sleep over it

I think it all comes down to how he wants to allocate his time. Seems like he could have made all that money on his own with enough time/hustle but maybe he just wanted to focus on doing his thing instead of expanding the business side?

It’s more than money to Rogan. He’s actively looking to counterbalance the YouTube monopoly with this deal as well.

He would’ve eventually been censored/canceled. It’d be a mistake to not protect himself from that.

Great take. It’s lame but you can read through his comments and see sentiment changing. Think it was a smart move by joe. He’s also in his 50s and probably wants time to hunt more elk anyhow.
