This doesn’t make sense. By that logic, only make a course if you’re the best in the world. You’re saying only charge if you’re the best in the world. So shake shack and Macdonald’s can’t coexist?

You could argue that they both serve different audiences and are best in the world for their audience. I think the point is about direct monetization of a newsletter versus indirect monetization.

Forget the newsletter part. Who cares what the medium is. If people are happy to pay and like the product, who the hell cares how you rank as best in the world. It’s a stupid, fluffy and unrealistic generalization.

Why does only charge via newsletter if you’re the best matter vs only charge in the form of a course or other medium? It’s arbitrary to say newsletter vs podcast vs database vs tv show.

The medium matters. It represents the audience and their expectations.

If people are willing to pay, they find your content worth paying for. Doesn’t matter if you’re “best in the world”.

for sure. I’m saying I believe you won’t having many willing buyers of your paid content if you aren’t A++. And you’d have a higher ROI of having a free newsletter, and charging for other services/products where your newsletter is top of funnel to that.

Look at all the shit products out there that people buy. If you’re good at selling a shit product, you can still crush. Not saying that’s good or bad. But it’s the truth.

Inside moved to paid and it was the best decision we ever made. It’s hard no doubt...but it has kept us focused on creating a better product and over time we will be in a much better position to innovate and grow while maintaining quality.
