Austin is speaking truth here. Very relevant to create a sustainable paid newsletter. By charging for a newsletter you are monetizing your expertise, not anything else.https://twitter.com/austin_rief/status/1259512219311669248 …

@theSamParr had some tough advice on this on the Indie Hacker Podcast with@csallen. Some real gold in there!1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -
Yeah this take is wrong. Big time wrong. Paid newsletter is paid information. So only do paid info if you’re the best. No. Only do paid info if people want to buy it and like it.

That’s not the point here.
@austin_rief isn’t saying only the best should do paid. He’s saying that - if you’re not the best - you shouldn’t *only* produce a paid newsletter. You need free content etc too. Nothing controversial there IMO.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

I just think this is a stupid gate keeping rule. I try my hardest (I fail often) to not make these huge sweeping rules. There are thousands of ways to succeed and achieve a goal.

And if it matters I do not think Austin is stupid. Opposite. Very smart. Cool guy too.I just think this point is dumb. And I don’t want people to see this and be persuaded not to do something. People do (and in many cases should) follow his advice. But I think this is bad advice

Appreciate that Sam. Perhaps “best in the world” is too aggressive. My point is simply everyone is following the herd and creating paid newsletters. The problem is, the vast majority of these people aren’t that good. Their content is good, but not good enough to pay 100/year

So my advice to them is rather than charging and limiting their owned top of funnel, they create a a free relationship with more people, and then charge people later.

But if you charge for something people don’t want, you are not making money or building an audience over email, a VERY powerful platform.

Substack made paid newsletters seem popular. They aren’t. Just in our circle jerk world. But they’ve been around for decades. And thrived. I also don’t via either u or me as newsletter companies. But info brands that happen to use email/newsletters
