If you aren't the best in the world at what you write about, you should not have a strictly paid newsletter. You are better off using a newsletter as your top of funnel to drive people to other monetization opportunities.

Sam, you better than anyone else should understand the value of owning your audience and having a large top of funnel.

I do understand the importance. I have have top of funnel in thousands of ways. Kylie Jenner has that. Are her lip kits the best? I don’t know. I don’t care. She shouldn’t not sell shit based on if it’s the best but do orople want it

You could argue that they both serve different audiences and are best in the world for their audience. I think the point is about direct monetization of a newsletter versus indirect monetization.

Forget the newsletter part. Who cares what the medium is. If people are happy to pay and like the product, who the hell cares how you rank as best in the world. It’s a stupid, fluffy and unrealistic generalization.

Everyone’s value or need is different when they consider paying for content/product. Some people pay for products that others would never pay for. Once you discover who that person is then you can monetize accordingly. You don’t have to be the best...you have to add value.
