I can't stand this whole humble, "help me survive" mentality. Yes - it's good sometimes. But for most, you're devaluing yourself. Get confident. Charge in exchange for value. Will a restaurant feed you then beg for a donation? Why do that with your art, content, whatever?

Definition of a patron: a person chosen, named, or honored as a special guardian, protector, or supporter. Definition of customer: one that purchases a commodity or service. Get customers. Not patrons.

Look at this. I LOVE this guy's Youtube channel. I intend to buy stuff from him. Yet, look at his positioning: "Your potential pledge of $1/month can help me keep doing what I'm doing. As a thank you for your pledge, I will release my programming for you to download as I create

Agree. Would be interesting to see how many different pledges Patreons have active on average. I have never done more than one at a time, and quit because it gave no/little added value. Could have done the same through PayPal and gotten the extra content through mail e.g.

Yeah. It’s a bit sleazy to say the least. I think it applies more to people who don’t actually make money from their creative side. I follow content creators who work in industries where the money isn’t there, but the value they provide is wanted.

Agree, plus the “help me get by” doesn’t scale. Once people start making six figures through patreon viewers donate much less because the person is now making more than them.

Most people I see use it, use it as a way to sell premium upgrades to their content, and don't really use the donation type wording. It is more a platform to sell their content, and a pretty well-built out platform at that.

I started looking into Patreon yesterday. I put it off because of the concerns you raised. One strategy that I like is a subscription service: you send me
$X/mo and I'll shoot you a postcard or sketch that I happened to make. It's a great way for artists to subsidize studies.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
