No one buys one computer over another because of the camera.

I think that has changed.

many functions vs. one function but agree that one function has suddenly become 10x more important

Think this is right. There'll be a <$300 plug-and-play DSLR quality webcam gets to market in next few months and makes a killing. Then Apple will put the iPhone 8 module in their next Mac(book) lineup refresh, and nobody will ever buy a webcam again.

The demand didn’t merit the added cost but that’s going to change.

I think it’s because companies have been able to get away with it and didn’t see it as a point of differentiation worth investing in. It’ll be interesting to see if any companies make the switch in the next year and attribute an uptick in sales to the camera.

I don't think manufacturers will invest to improve computer cameras. The low quality cameras today is a strong sign that they already don't invest in hardware. Plus I strongly believe everyone will be working from the phone going forward anyway. Computers will be obsolete.

At least partly physics. There's a reason the iPhone has a camera bump. Depth from screen to camera lens is 2-3x the thickness of a MacBook screen/case. Hard to get a lens & sensor in there with the kind of optics desired. That said, could still be wayyyyy better.
