Not exactly. CPM was a viable business model throughout the boom and these are mostly sites who weren't around last recession. There's a lot of fat and excess spend before you even get to fixing the monetization aspect.

What's disappointing is that they -to me at least- they are an example of a publisher that is branching out of ad-dependency and venturing into content creation for Netflix and YouTube. Wasn't enough apparently.

Totally agree on the need for more revenue channels, but it’s also important to remember that all businesses work at some cost basis. Global pandemics suck, but so does unnatural scale in the pursuit of impossibly-high valuations.

Agree. I think it is a good biz model when combined with affiliate and a leaner team. But diversifying into subscription, digital and physical products is the way to go. And of course building an email list

Pretty sure they also have events (Decode), physical subscriptions (NY Mag?) and SaaS (Chorus). All of which probably took a big hit too
