People are underestimating the effect of this virus on media companies. Majority thrive on advertisements. Since most businesses are not in operations, that means no revenue from adverts. It's a tough period.

Buzzfeed did this at one point too and it was their lowest moment. That being said, it would be cool if Vox did a massive A/B test (paywall vs. donation ask) and publicly released the data. Insights could go a long way towards saving local news orgs that have value.

Vox is a wanna be media. Obviously it won't work in times when you want to get relevant news and facts. The sad thing is they will get grants that other more deserving businesses need, that are at the front fighting this difficult situation.
