What's the best place to host a group/community these days?

I respect your opinion, because I think you're more knowledgeable than I am on the subject, but I loathe Facebook. I find the organization repugnant and I personally don't know anyone in my tech circles who uses their Facebook anymore. Most keep the profile or have placeholder.
Maybe people say the same thing. But still, everyone has one. and most check at least weekly. Which is better than most forums.

That's totally fair! And you're definitely right about total number of users. IMHO, Facebook breathed its last breath for folks under 35 in 2016. I'd love to see DAU numbers for that group today. Personally, I like Slack and don't find it noisy, but I use the mute a lot.

I also find it lacking a ton of features, which isn't ideal. BUT, at least I don't need to deal with Facebook. I'm interested in some of the other solutions mentioned in this thread, because I think that the private social networks of the future won't exist on either platform.
