When someone posts a thought on Twitter, it is an invitation for discussion (mostly). At the same time the poster is NOT obligated to engage with all replies.

The larger the follower count of the poster the less likely it is you will receive engagement. The more viral the post, the less likely it is your reply will be heard.

It’s human nature to want to be seen. Esp by someone we perceive as higher status. I mean if Chrissy Teigen acknowledged my existence I’d probably faint.

At the same time, going into replies with any kind of attitude or expectation will dramatically decrease your chances of engagement. Ask yourself why anyone would want to engage with your reply before you send it.

Ask yourself what your intent is with your reply. Is it to be seen? Is it to make someone feel better or worse? Is it to share information? Flaunt your own knowledge? What do you WANT when you reply?

I get being provocative for a response. That’s a tactic best saved for punching up. You aren’t expecting or needing a reply. There’s a reason people say things like “sincere question” and “ with respect” in replies. It’s a good model if you truly seek interaction.

If you jump into replies with the intent to just repeat basic knowledge, to take up air time, you are wasting everyone’s time including your own.

Bottom line: add value in your twitter replies. You’re more likely to get positive attention. Add a fact. Make a witty, not stupid joke. Offer knowledge that builds-eg doesn’t repeat the post.

If you plan to educate the poster, assume they know. “As I am sure you know, x” “Support for your position” “Have you seen x’s take?”

Above all, assume no one owes you a response or engagement. Your reply can either foster a relationship or not. It’s up to you.
