My first real business (HD Windows). Charged $30/labour hour, paid staff (my buddies) $12/hr + $3/hr performance bonus. Startup costs were a 1992 GMC Jimmy, some sunlight dish soap (the secret weapon), and a few ladders. 10/10 would clean again.

Curious how you stayed within the quoted price while paying an hourly wage. Did you have your buddies quote the job and then hold them accountable to that quote/hour estimate?

Funny I was thinking about that exact business this morning. Can't wait to hear the pod.

There's this Harvard Business Review book on how to buy small businesses. Their favorite example is high rise window washing because of the moat in that line of work. No one is going to haggle over small increases in price. Very few competitors. Low churn

My secret weapon was a capful of industrial ammonia. At 16 years old managed to develop a route of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in affluent area. Killed it! $300+ a weekend cash (in the late 70’s) and the ladies loved me!

Used to pay a homeless man hustling with a bike, bucket, and squeegee for a downtown restaurant business. Relationship worked well until we moved the job in house.
