Is there any good reporting on what happened to the trendy media things that were going to be the future? Like do people still visit: theSkimm, Mic, Cheddar, Vice, Axios, The Outline, Upworthy , ViralNova, LittleThings, Refinery29,BuzzFeed, Vox, Ozy, Vocativ , etc?

So, do answer your question of "do people still visit:" The answer is 100%, without a doubt, yes. And in many cases, millions of people a month do.
