Example: https://digiday.com/media/fortune-rolling-three-tier-membership-program/ …. Fortune is doing subscription now. But they're charging $5 per month. Will take a TON of subscribers to make a dent.

Counter point from a coastal elite: Does 100% paid limit your ability to market your exceptional content versus mostly paid and being deliberate with what's free?
-
I think that's what most people think. But from what I've learned from paid apps and SaaS businesses, you can earn more revenue from charging upfront than giving stuff away. Having a hard paywall and good sales copy gets the curiosity going and gets people to pay.

What's your take on Medium's model where it seems like emphasis is on platform and quantity of content?
-
I do not think Medium will be a company in 5-10 years.

I think community can be a value driver. I would not subscribe to NYT or WSJ as it’s news and content I can get elsewhere for free. But something like The Hustle or The Information, where it extends much further than just written word, is worth it IMO.

Hi there I'm just a guy from the forests of the PNW but I totally SUBSCRIBE this this idea.
I'm exploring launching a hyper-local news site and found really helpful data in my research:

Love the great tools and infra (like
@SubstackInc,@TryGhost,@memberful, others) that make it easier than ever before to get the tooling set up. Obviously the *hard part* is making content people love and pay for up-front. - 1 more reply

To get subscribers you need to present yourself as a guide first. An email is worth $20, so give them 1 big reason or 20 small reasons to subscribe to your nurture flow. They’ll happily upgrade to paid if you’ve successfully presented yourself as the solution to their problems.
