Update: last night was the hearing. It ended well. In favor of Joey The Cat and small businesses! Happy the city didn't let bullies win.

I live nearby and I'm sympathetic. But I'm also extremely suspicious that they chose a libertarian rag like Reason to push this. Very, very suspicious.

If a DR is denied (?), the city should charge the filing party the cost of the delay, X months * Y dollars (e.g. cost of rent plus opportunity cost of delayed opening) and award that to the developer to put toward the project. Something like that.

Here's what I don't get: This space is zoned in such a way that this use is legal. So why is any further approval even necessary? Why is it a good thing to require individual vetting of every use of every space in a neighborhood?
