You must be limiting search to most desirable and high priced blocks. Even in San Fran $900K gets you 1,800 Sq. ft., detached house, 3BR, 2BA. Only top 2% of US wage earners make $350,000 or more a year. I refuse to feel sorry for any of them who choose to live beyond means.
Can you link me to some San Francisco homes that are 1,800 sq ft and only cost 900k?

And here is a Fort Lee (ok..not IN Manhattan....but damn close....). Small little place. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/56-Claremont-Rd-Fort-Lee-NJ-07024/37905815_zpid/ … "Only" $1.25M, 4,700 sq. ft., 5BR, 6BA, and even "looks" like a mansion..... $1.8 million is a LOT TO SPEND FOR A HOUSE in ANY market.

Yeah because you're required to live in the heart of one of the most expensive cities in the country. Living outside of the city and commuting is out of the question.
