For those of you asking me if I bought my wework equity—I did not. But, not because I didn’t choose to buy it. Despite joining the company very early on, I was not offered options. Here’s a thread about what happened and my feelings about it now. /1

Cool thread. 1 thing that I find wild is that people are mad for you. It's wild that people think equity is their right. It's not. For years people started/owned businesses and others worked there for a salary. But now equity is assumed. Seems outlandish.

I think I took a pretty objective approach and I’m trying to be diplomatic through it all. I agree that people are really rallying and strong in their opinions which I find interesting and of course, really supportive.

I can’t say I find it outlandish but I can say that I respect and understand the opinions of pretty much every angle, including yours. I always welcome the discourse.

I dig the insight. If I were Adam I would have given equity to employees (we do at our co). And I think you're handling it better than I would. But I also think some folks replies are silly and entitled.

Out of curiosity (don't answer if you don't want to): but were you paid well as the 17th employee? Was it market rate for NYC for a young person?

I don’t know what market rate was. I started as a community manager and they gave me $10 an hour. this converted to 28,000 a year after two months to see if they liked me i guess. After three mo, I was promoted to community manager, making 36. i doubt this was “market” though.

Yeah. Seems low without equity. Would have thought the only way they could get good folks without options is good salary. Hopefully you'll have plenty more success to make this seem like no big deal.

Even tho equity is not a "right" it's how startup game is set up. Very very few SUs pay close to market rate yet demand more of ea/ee than any other co. in same industry. So no not a "right" but fair b/c SUs expect ees to work as hard as founders. Otherwise call it an internship

Or just a cool job with below market pay where the decisions you make actually matter. Equity isn’t always needed. Additionally, if the company doesn’t plan on selling what’s the point of equity

In places like the Bay Are or NYC you can't get far with below market anything. I could say the same thing other way around: founders should start stuff in Billings, MT where no equity and $10/hr working 80hrs a week makes the math work
