So, instead of asking for layoffs to stop, higher than market salaries, and other things, what about asking for a way to work together to create a very profitable company with profit sharing? Or lower expenses by cutting staff that work on losing projects?

Or saying "we are not creating value as a company. we, the workers, are a MAJOR part of this company...we demand more training so we can adapt and learn more profitable skills! we also demand that leaders be held accountable for not making profits!!!"

Hell, look at the Vox and Buzzfeed offices! Cut costs. Move to...GASP...New Jersey for cheaper offices. How about packing more people in per square foot. Get profitable. Make soooo much money that employees get overpaid.pic.twitter.com/jXxgGGn7Ys

If I were the boss at Buzzfeed or @voxdotcom, I'd sit down with @vox_union and just show them the financials. "The company should make 20% income. After that, we can do profit sharing...what can you do to help us all get there?"

Would you also show them executive salaries and expenses/overhead that are part of the reasons they aren’t profitable? I also think cushy spaces/dumb perks give people the illusion companies are profitable/have cash to spend.

That’s always where I am. Show everyone the financials. Show what all the perks cost the company. Give the employees some financial stake and see if they want some of those perks. Unions help employees get to that point hopefully.

Just say "we need to hit this profit number this year. If we do, everyone get's paid more. Let's work together."

But until the company is profitable, I would never give in to a union.

You’re speaking in good faith as an owner who cares about employees. I also think more appropriate would be ‘are we able to be profitable’ as a barometer for a successful business. Choosing to reinvest for market share eats at profitability.

Well, you have to. It's buzzfeed's duty to get as big and valuable as possible. They took outsider money and promised to do everything possible (so long as it's legal) to make SHIT LOADS of cash an a big return for investors. If owning market share does that, then do it.

And on the flip side, employees need to know this. And if they're not down with that, get the fuck off the ride and go work at the St. Louis Post Dispatch where change won't happen as fast.

PD got bought by Lee Enterprise. Lots of changes there right now. But to your point, do buzzfeed employees make more than local papers? Do you think they should? If so I agree. They are helping grow that market share and ROI so they should be paid according to value gained.
