If these companies were super successful and employees were underpaid or mistreated, then I get it. But we're talking about pretty cushy gigs with free food, health insurance, Manhattan offices, and other perks even though the companies are struggling.

You’re speaking in good faith as an owner who cares about employees. I also think more appropriate would be ‘are we able to be profitable’ as a barometer for a successful business. Choosing to reinvest for market share eats at profitability.

Well, you have to. It's buzzfeed's duty to get as big and valuable as possible. They took outsider money and promised to do everything possible (so long as it's legal) to make SHIT LOADS of cash an a big return for investors. If owning market share does that, then do it.
