Most of these companies are not profitable. Or if they are, it's not much. It's not like the owners are hoarding the profits...there really aren't any! Most of these companies are struggling. Their business models don't work or their products stink or whatever.
Just say "we need to hit this profit number this year. If we do, everyone get's paid more. Let's work together."

You’re speaking in good faith as an owner who cares about employees. I also think more appropriate would be ‘are we able to be profitable’ as a barometer for a successful business. Choosing to reinvest for market share eats at profitability.
