Loads of NYC media companies are unionizing (or at least trying to). Buzzfeed, Vox, Thrillist, and more. I'm not an expert on unions, but I do know a little bit about them. Still, here is what I don't understand...

Most of these companies are not profitable. Or if they are, it's not much. It's not like the owners are hoarding the profits...there really aren't any! Most of these companies are struggling. Their business models don't work or their products stink or whatever.

If these companies were super successful and employees were underpaid or mistreated, then I get it. But we're talking about pretty cushy gigs with free food, health insurance, Manhattan offices, and other perks even though the companies are struggling.

Hell, on Buzzfeed's job page they say "no work on your birthday!" My god. https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs

So, instead of asking for layoffs to stop, higher than market salaries, and other things, what about asking for a way to work together to create a very profitable company with profit sharing? Or lower expenses by cutting staff that work on losing projects?

Or saying "we are not creating value as a company. we, the workers, are a MAJOR part of this company...we demand more training so we can adapt and learn more profitable skills! we also demand that leaders be held accountable for not making profits!!!"

Anyway. Just a thought. What the hell do I know.

Hell, look at the Vox and Buzzfeed offices! Cut costs. Move to...GASP...New Jersey for cheaper offices. How about packing more people in per square foot. Get profitable. Make soooo much money that employees get overpaid.pic.twitter.com/jXxgGGn7Ys

If I were the boss at Buzzfeed or
@voxdotcom, I'd sit down with@vox_union and just show them the financials. "The company should make 20% income. After that, we can do profit sharing...what can you do to help us all get there?"2 replies 0 retweets 11 likesShow this thread -
Would you also show them executive salaries and expenses/overhead that are part of the reasons they aren’t profitable? I also think cushy spaces/dumb perks give people the illusion companies are profitable/have cash to spend.

100%. I imagine a top exec at a 1,000 person company with $300m in revenue but isn't profitable should earn $1m-$2m a year. That's about market. But it also depends if it's majority-owned by 1 person. If yes, it's the owner's property and they can do whatever the fuck they want.
