    Every time I've written a thing in Python and complained that it's slow, and proceeded to rewrite it in Rust, I'm absolutely amazed by how much faster it is. Turns out a lot of that performance gain is due to my Rust code being much less allocation-heavy.

    I keep telling people at my Uni "what you are doing is undefined behaviour" — and I always get answers like "but only technically, every compiler does something sensible here anyway".

    There might be multiple reasons it is unsafe, but a reason it can fail *in practice* is when `simple` is used as a base class, and the derived class stores some of its members in the padding of `simple`. Then, memcpy or memset into a simple object clobbers the derived member.

    Today in "things I definitely didn't know about GCC / Clang": int foo(bar, baz) int bar; int baz; { return bar + baz; } still compiles without warnings on modern GCC / Clang with -Wall -Wextra -std=c11
