My fundamental issue with being on call is that I care more about my personal life & health than I do about whether my employer’s website is operational.
I assume everyone does! So...why do we put up with on-call at all?
Maybe there’s something to this labor solidarity thing

One team I was on just set simple rules. Called after midnight? Half day off. Spend 2 hours or more resolving after midnight? Don’t come in the next day (provided you handoff). Have to come in to handoff/finish? Free vacation day of your choosing.

The problem with this is, your life is disrupted regardless of if you are paged or not. You have to be by a computer the entire on-call period. And there’s research showing just knowing you could be paged leads to measurable increases in stress hormones and negative health impact
