Working on design for one of our new games here and it sort of clicked to me why the stuff I make tends to be systems and action driven: it allows me to still be surprised when it's finally finished. I think if I was making something really narrative-focused I would lose that?

Would be curious to hear how more narrative-focused gamedevs feel about their game as it takes shape. For me it always feels like building a machine of which you don't know exactly how it will work, or how someone will decide to use it. That's quite exciting.

I’ve made and enjoy both. With linear games I enjoy the craft of arranging all the pieces just so to create a sublime singular moment/experience. I also find this work tends to be more emotionally resonant, and my goals have shifted that way lately; I enjoy that communication

Put another way in terms closer to yours, with linear games I can set a clear goal for what I want the emotional experience to be, and the satisfaction comes from slowly building towards that goal and seeing how well it’s working with players.
