I make games “additively,” and focus on building on what’s in the game already so it grows outward from the center/core idea. Not a lot of iteration. I do return to old ideas and hone them in and clean them up, but I’m just as happy to move forward before I know a piece is done

For me characters are usually the root. They lead the story, and the story in turn leads the gameplay and the music/audio decisions.

I should add, even though this sounds specific to wandersong, it isn’t! Even when doing a small game with little to no apparent plot/dialogue, I’m thinking about the player character and letting their personality guide everything else
