Question how much of the ~$200 B in venture capital raised in the past few years do we think will end up in Facebook and Google's hands via startup advertising?

This Monday, in class, explained how the retina performs a 100× compression to go from 100M photoreceptors to 1M axons in the optic nerve. As a consequence, the central object in this video appears to become brighter / darker although its brightness is constant. – mjesto: NYU Center for Data Science

I thought borders and armies were just because of human egos and stupidity. Is it but natural?

12/ So that was it. I hope the much more well-read (than me, a sloth barely finishing a book a year) viewers on this thread will DM/comment with related theories or observations they've come across! Opinions and feedback always welcome :)

11/ But again, why would identity turn out to be the best of evolution? I'd say its perhaps not. It just worked out well for the past ~million years(?) but the way humans have linked their identity with countries, leading to nationalism, it seems more destructive than empowering.

10/ Identity, or Ahamkar, has been one of the major sectors of the mind as explained by Vedic philosophies: Part of this theory comes from speeches by and lectures by my course instructor Dr Puneet Bindlish.

9/ Think about it. Identity lets you relate to certain well-needed resources. You identify with your body, so you'd protect all your limbs. You identify with your territory, so you'd have monopoly over its food. You identify with your tribe, and the tribe helps you survive.

8/ The next question I asked myself was "But why were we humans given this illusion of soul/consciousness/identity at all?" ... to which the answer echoes "Don't flatter yourself. Identity might just be an evolutionary trick that helped humans (and other animals) survive."

7/ So our theory extends from realms of consciousness into identity, proposing that *I* is nothing but a convenient myth - a simplification of the complexity. What you call "I" are some neurons that perhaps send such strong signals that they practically control your whole body.

6/ If you're like me, the most concerning bit about this theory is: "Why do I feel so strongly about these conscious thoughts as compared to all the other signals running amok in my brain?" I believe the answer lies in the beginning of the question there: "I".

5/ Lack of an altogether different system for conscious thoughts might also explain why activities can easily switch between - being done consciously and subconsciously (eg. talking, driving, playing, humming music).

4/ By definition, it covers the special properties that System 2 has, as evidently demonstrated and summarized in Kanheman's book. These include the ability to hold symbols in short term memory, do calculations, attend to a specific goal, and so on.
