Bilek started formally breaking into the gender critical scene in 2016 when she was published in Female Erasure that October. However, she's been commenting on "body dissociation" before that point. Of note, she isn't the first to describe "gender dysphoria as dissociation from biological sex." Such ideas were being posted by 4thWave in 2015 after picking it up from radfem detrans women. Essentially, 4thWave brought ideas in from radfem detrans circles and made them palatable for therapist, parents, and non-radfem women. As noted by the podcast, Bilek didn't start getting conservative platforms until 2018 when she wrote her Federalist article. Extremist attitudes and tactics were exploding in popularity, with heavily antisemitic, anti-Black, & anti-Muslim tones. We were already seeing the marches. Far-right propaganda spread like wildfire online, in some instances merging with QAnon, and getting increasingly violent.
Here is @splcenter's writeup about QAnon back in January 2018. They described it as "[p]art “Pizzagate,” part New World Order, and part hyper-partisan wishful thinking by defenders of Donald Trump." Given that context, it's no surprise that Bilek's rhetoric has taken off. She was able to market to a unique overlap of parents and "concerned women" that were already becoming sympathetic to extreme beliefs. Places like 4thWave generate the ideas, Bilek generates the militancy.
This is why @reclaimingtrans and I have been worried about the "Gender Offenders" map (of which Bilek is not only in full support of, but openly advertises). Given the DGR tactics, it's not hard to imagine that such content could eventually be used for acts of violence.pic.twitter.com/DipTKMFx3s
