I didn't read all of JK Rowling's extremely long essay because I got tired of slogging through bad writing, but the part where she said that if she'd been born later, she might have decided to transition stood out like a blinking neon sign, and yet hardly anybody talks about it.

I know it's tempting to take that as A Struggle She Is Having, but the sentiment she expressed is a TERF dogwhistle. They believe all trans men are women with internalized misogyny, and that if we Fix The Patriarchy, trans men won't exist anymore.

She isn't saying "I might actually be a man", she's saying "if I was born later, the trans cult might have made me transition to escape misogyny. Instead, I became a feminist and fixed my internalized misogyny."

I think there's room for both possibilities to coexist: A) That a decent number of TERFs are closeted self-hating trans men. B) That sentiments we recognize as bearing the signature of closeted self-hating trans men have been replicated and become a prong of TERF ideology.

this is assuming that the "prongs of TERF ideology" are just coincidentally born from closeted trans men's angst. no. "trans men transition to escape misogyny" and the "lost women/lost lesbians" rhetoric has been used to justify abuse, murder, and corrective rape.

Evan is actually right here. There’s a whole underground network where TERF ideology is born in part from self-hatred of one’s transness and then directing it towards other trans men and transmasc people.https://kyschevers.medium.com/detransition-as-conversion-therapy-a-survivor-speaks-out-7abd4a9782fa …

Folks need to understand that trans men and transmasc people are not *just* victims of TERF rhetoric. We are just as capable of internalizing these beliefs and doing harm, even when mentally distancing ourselves from being trans. Both things can be true and often are.
