@thatcks have you tried VNC to an X11 server (Xvfb)?
VNC proto is usually less chatty than X11. Esp on latent links.
TIL that my DSL is now fast enough that I can run a remote X session of VMWare Workstation without problems. Including booting a machine.

@drscriptt I haven't tried it and the VNC approach is counter to how I want to do remote X if I'm doing it at all. -
@thatcks fair. I worked in an extremely latent env where VNC being kiss chatty than X11 helped a LOT. -
@thatcks I do really like how integrated X11 forwarding through ssh is.
