And the log entries are present in the systemd journal, so I wasn't imagining that they once existed.

@thatcks Systemd decided they were redundant and deleted them for you? Or mounted /dev/shm atop /var/log? -
@oclsc It's more mysterious. The files are there, but entries jump from April 2nd or so to April 9th with the stuff in the middle vanished. -

Oh. Of course. The syslog entries didn't disappear; systemd just barfed a huge amount of old ones up during a reboot.

So my syslog entries go Apr 9 -> huge mass of old log lines -> Apr 9th again and I didn't go back far enough to see the pre-reboot 9th ones.
