Most systems have really short default log retention times that were set back in the days of tiny disks and are very out of date now.
Fellow #sysadmin people, my message to you today is to keep your system logs for longer. Eg you probably have disk space for a year of logs.

@thatcks As long as you retain them someplace safe. That stuff is sensitive. -
@thatcks be mindful of exceeding data retention policies and the ramifications therein. I.e. eDiscovery
