Talked about this at #LISA13. Some may find it interesting: http://ow.ly/qOyFJ "Eventual regulation of system administration?" #sysadmin
@standaloneSA I don't believe direct regulation of system administration will happen, partly for social and cynical reasons.

@thatcks that's a completely legit view. It may not. - View other replies

@standaloneSA If people can't even make gestures towards unionization, 'you must be licensed or you can't work' is an even harder sell. -
@thatcks If you assume that's the goal. There are other reasons to go down that path. -
@standaloneSA I can't see a path that doesn't tilt that way. Outside regulation takes safety; internally driven regulation is profit-driven. - View other replies

@thatcks I also don't see why you can't have an internal push to safety and responsibility. You have to have an "inside" first, though -
@standaloneSA To be clear: I think that there is a huge gulf between mere certification and active regulation. - View other replies

@thatcks So you have a bootstrap procedure. You need a group to rally behind, you need to codify the practice, & you need to build buy-in. -
@standaloneSA One problem I see is 'what practice?'. I don't think SA has a body of settled practice the way auto work does. - View other replies
