@thatcks why should the pool care? If the software understands the hardware, such concerns should be abstracted away from user.
The ZFS developers seem to have a model of the world where people don't keep their existing pools through disk drive technology transitions.

@Twirrim The pool shouldn't care but it does; if you created a vdev with 512-byte disks, you can't add disks with 4K physical sectors to it.
