Unpopular opinion: systemd is a worthwhile and significant gain over SysV init. It fixes dark corners and improves life for sysadmins.

@rone It's a new (and unpopular to many) Linux thing. The Solaris 10 thing was/is SMF and it stinks utterly (eg it uses lots of XML).

@thatcks is it related to upstart? lotta hate for that. i'm still stuck in the past. and, yes, the XML stink overwhelmed the good in SMF.

@rone It's an upstart competitor; Ubuntu has upstart, Fedora has systemd. I don't like upstart, it gets stuff wrong that systemd gets right.

@thatcks hmm, but can i use it without Fedora? because fuck that.

@rone Wikipedia says also OpenSuse, Arch Linux, Mandriva, and some others. Presumably it will be in RHEL/CentOS/etc at some point.

@thatcks we're a Pubuntu shop. Red Hat can die in a fire. RPM is a crime against humanity.

@rone We'll have to agree to disagree on that, since I have my issues with the Debian package format and prefer RPM's solutions.

@thatcks Does it have anything over SMF tho (besides portability & "they're both a sod to learn")?

      2. Chris Siebenmann ‏@thatcks 7 Dec 2012

@aderixon My view is yes, it has a lot over SMF (but it's not portable, it's Linux-specific). SMF is 'enterprise', systemd actually works.
