Why are so many of us concerned about the SJW movement in ostensibly “evangelical” contexts? Great example: MBTS staffer thinking the conflict in Gal. 2 has absolutely ANYTHING to do with “race.” Stunning how fast this has happened, and how deep it goes!https://twitter.com/jaredcwilson/status/1053355398676144128 …

I fear that some are overreacting to all of the SJ controversy and not allowing the Bible to speak towards race at all. Again, not arguing that race is the primary issue at hand here in Galatians 2:20. But at the same time, I'm not willing to say that race is irrelevant either.

< sigh > Jewish boundary markers of circumcision etc. are NOT PARALLEL to ethnicities. How could they be? Paul’s own interpretation of his actions with reference to Peter were utterly, 1000% non-racial.
-
Again, I am not saying that Paul's point was some kind of abstract racial reconciliation one. However, the theological issue had direct impact on how Jewish people related to non-Jewish people. I don't think it is fair to criticize people making this application.
-
Some Jewish converts looked down on the non-Jewish ones. The question is why they did. It wasn't over race. it was over religion. It was over circumcision. Paul didn't plead for racial reconciliation. He pled for gospel consistency. Circumcision doesn't save. . .

How can you say that circumcision was the issue and not admit that race is involved in at least some way? Circumcision/uncircumcision has everything to do with race. If you were circumcised, you were Jewish. If you weren't, you were Gentile.
-
How? Because circumcision was a religious matter, not a racial one. Muslims don't hate Christians because Christians are "white". They hate Christians because we are, "Infidels". We are idolators and law-breakers, in their eyes. This isn't "racism" by anyone's definition.

I am not saying that Paul's primary point in Galatians 2 is to say, "Peter was being racist, so I rebuked him." But to completely deny any ramifications for race relations is a little much for me.

I agree that the primary issue is theological. Paul was concerned about preserving the true gospel, which is salvation by grace through faith. No works. BUT. Peter's misunderstanding of this had DIRECT implications on Jew/Gentile relations.
