A few years ago we flew in to Sofia then used busses & trains to do Nis, Sarajevo, Belgrade and out of Budapest. Saw no other UK tourists.

It was an interesting trip, right down to smugglers, land mine signs, train searches and some of the most friendly people you can meet.
