This selection was based here on meaning: one speaker was saying something meaningful, the other was uttering nonsensical sentences. Sleepers had the tendencies to process better the meaningful speaker, when presented in competition with the meaningless one.

How do we know? Since sleepers are unresponsive and do not usually recall what happened during their sleep, we cannot ask them. To bypass this limitation, we directly reconstructed what they heard from their
#EEG activity (thanks to@edmundlalor's team for this incredible method)Prikaži ovu nit -
Meaningful stimuli were better reconstructed than meaningless ones during sleep. Importantly, when presented alone, these stimuli are equally well reconstructed. Meaningless stimuli can even be better reconstructed if awake participants are instructed to pay attention to them.

Attention allocation during sleep differed from wakefulness in the fact it was transient (maintained for several seconds and then fading) and present only in light NREM sleep. K-complexes seem to support this processing of the outside world by creating "windows of wakefulness"

A big thank to my colleagues from
@Cognition_ENS for this work including@SidKouider, Matthieu Koroma and Guillaume Legendre. More studies are on the way focusing this time on REM sleep.Prikaži ovu nit -

Actually, all this is nicely in line with a study from our group published earlier last year https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1053811918304749?via%3Dihub …
