Why some people can’t ? I am being asked this a lot and I have sadly little to answer! But I am hopeful that the problem of can be cracked! Here is a modest contribution, published now in Sleep Medicine with my colleagues from Paris:

2/ In REM, sensory information coming from within (the stuff that dreams are made on?) could block external information (*informational gating*). Ultimately, very different mechanisms occurring in disparate phys. states could result in the same outcome: the preservation of sleep.

1/ In NREM sleep, there is growing evidence that neuronal bistability could induce a form of *cortical gating*, preventing sensory information to spread throughout the cortex.

We show, in particular, the limitations of the influential *thalamic gating* hypothesis proposed 25 years ago. We outline additional and potentially more preponderant mechanisms of sensory decoupling:

I am very happy to share this paper w/ for Current Op in Physiology (free) We review the physiological mechanisms allowing sleepers to either block sensory inputs or to process them without waking up.

Local sleep could explain the different cognitive profiles of attention lapses: in frontal cortices, it could impair executive control, rendering people impulsive, including with their own thoughts. The wandering mind could stem from a sleepy brain!

We focused on the impact of local sleep on objective performance and subjective experience. We argue that a simple physiological event (local slow waves) could account for a variety of outcomes depending on where it occurs in the brain.

3/ Besides, why the fact that 23% of non-experts trusted IIT would be problematic? 22% trusted GNW according to the same survey. So what? Besides, these proportions correspond to 33 and 31 individuals (numbers below).
