When I was a kid, I thought games were made linearly. Like, the first part of Final Fantasy X was made first and the last part made last. I thought that's why some games failed to stick the landing, because the developers were tired.

That's not that inaccurate. Every game I've worked on, the end really was done at the end. And we were tired. And it wasn't that great as a result. But it's OK because almost nobody ever gets to the end.
