Or as you get older you stop filling out the GDC survey because you realize how bad opt-in data surveys are? Just saying.... it's pretty dirty data...

As if a lot of young devs ever even interact or even want to interact with GDC. A lot of this data is incomplete, even if just due to language, but I don't think you can state that age relates to how likely it is someone fills out a survey, nor that that explains these results.

That is part of it, but it is mostly just a way of saying “there are 100x as many game developers now as there were 30 years ago, and 10x as many as there were 5 years ago” (guessing at the numbers but I don’t think I’m too far off)
-
I can only help but wonder how many of those fill out that GDC survey, though.

How does it compare to other industries? I know the median number of years a person stays at a company is just under 5 years.
-
company =/= industry You may leave Ford and go work for Tesla. People who quit gaming likely will go looking for jobs at any other industry. ANY other industry.

I bailed on the dev side because my "dream job" was actually a nightmare. Paid 33% of the average person with the skillset I had in my position. Boss was a dick to say the least. 80 - 100 hour weeks to meet demand. Some dream right? In it 4 years before I made the jump.

I've had my share of friends leave the industry for one reason or another. Some have made their way back. Most have not. No job is for everyone, but it saddens me that there are so many barriers to both entering our industry and staying in it. The industry needs to do better.

And I feel this is really hurting the industry. So much knowledge and experience simply vanishes with the people leaving. I mean I only really know the operations/infrastructure side, but in my consulting work I notice many studios don't have a single senior on board.
-
Really?? I’m luck enough to work at a good studio and we only hire new/junior for most roles never have such high retention. The design dept has an amazingly high ave work experience
