The mod just makes it 'more realistic', which seems to read to a lot of commenters as 'better', but the job of graphics is to communicate, not look 'real'. I do like Tree option 2. That's not a bad tree at all, and I imagine it stays readable at distance unlike option 1 and 3.

Great example of a lack of understanding for the original artistic direction. More photo textures/noise does not = pleasing on the eye or 'high res textures'
-
Easy to say when the "original artistic direction" simply looks similar to the DMC1 port on the same console. The overworld is simply lackluster and shooting down every try to improve on that seems counterproductive to the quality of future games

Just as a heads-up for those unaware, eevee and her partner are *hugely* fucked up people. I’ll post one link, google “Eevee Glitchedpuppet” and you’ll get lots more. https://66.media.tumblr.com/21e02655020f43de03d8dfb9ac0f474e/tumblr_osslnlz4jC1v7j0abo1_1280.jpg …

Art direction trumps detail every day of the week.
-
Details are, and Miyamoto said this himself, detrimental to immersion. (he said something about the details of a hand, and how a simple blob is better accepted by the player than a detailed, but terribly uncanny valley one)

There's a whole bunch of mods and demos that put Nintendo or other stylized characters in "super realistic" environments. I'm always surprised by the amount of people saying it looks amazing. Wonder where that comes from, that reaction...
-
I think it stems from games increasing in photorealism and fidelity so quickly over the years. Everytime there was a new console with higher fidelity it was a big deal and I think that made some people latch onto the idea that more realism was a sign of better graphics in general

Like a lot of texture mods it looks overly sharp, which makes everything look not very distinct. There's certainly skill in doing texture mods like this, but yeah I think the original looks better.
-
Also because that sharpness isn't universally applied throughout the game the textures look inconsistent.
