As a gamer and not a developer I've always wanted to know why it seems difficult to create a new engine, I'm looking at more of Bethesda and their pretty ancient one.

It's not even that hard to create a new engine -although that is incredibly complicated work- compared to the work it is to re-train, re-tool, and re-format an entire studio of hundreds of developers to use the new tool, find and fix the bugs in it, and do it on budget & schedule

I think if the industry was less secretive or just less vague we'd know more about what it takes. You'll always have a certain % of shitheads but I like to think it would be less. Take a game like Below ppl looking forward to it are just left to guess what's taking so long....

We've tried, but it always backfires, so many stopped trying.

As a player in 2018 why do I still have to press X to get to the main menu??????????
-
You want the honest answer here? It's a legacy certification requirement on most platforms, and the purpose is to allow a game to figure out what controller you're holding and what player profile to assign control.

How much time and effort it takes in general, even to make small things

Definitely! "Why so long to implement? It took (X company) a week to do this" when they actually started groundwork on it months ago but never mentioned it.

Indies do not often have a steady cash supply on hand, and often the leads are working without pay. The "rich" indie developer is the exception, not the rule.

Frankly I would say the “rich indie developer” is a myth.
