How much time and effort it takes in general, even to make small things

Definitely! "Why so long to implement? It took (X company) a week to do this" when they actually started groundwork on it months ago but never mentioned it.

Not a dev, but as a long-time observer of people in this business from both sides: I really wish people would stop dehumanzing devs. This endless trend of abuse and conflicting demands is obscene in any other business, and I still don't understand why they're an exception.
-
Worse than wanting to string up devs for not meeting some vague demand is seeing people get genuinely incensed at the idea of devs spending time with family, or having a health crisis, or any other perfectly normal human event happen. They expect devs to be literal machines.

That there's no real estimations of when a game will be finished until you're actually finished.

That a great majority of developers don't set out to make a game as a cash-in on trends, or set out to make a bad game itself.
-
Yes I try not to judge devs for this as from what I see these types of things are often forced by publishers or the business only want money type people

ONE thing? There's a lot more than one thing it'd be wonderful if they understood. But if I must pick one, I wish players understood: /the reality of game development/
-
sure it's not a useful answer but there are so many things going on, so many things outside of a gamedev's control; people only see the end product and don't know how it's made and draw very poor conclusions from that
